MA Program in Linguistics

 

All the information given below applies both to the single-major and the double-major program.

Duration of study: 4 semesters

Type of study: full-time study (lectures and individual supervision)

Competencies acquired upon finishing the study program:

Upon completion of the linguistics program students are prepared for work in academic and scientific institutions of a linguistic or philological orientation, or generally in the field of humanities. The training they receive shall prepare them for tasks that require knowledge of current theoretical issues and research methodologies in the fields of linguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive science. Depending on the chosen field of specialization, students shall acquire knowledge and skills relevant for various occupations in the area of translation, foreign language teaching, publishing, journalism, public relations, etc. Upon completion of the M.A. program in Linguistics students will be able to enroll in PhD programs in Linguistics, Information Science, Computer Science, Cognitive Science and the like, both in Croatia and abroad.

Learning outcomes at the program level:

  • in the fields of phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics students will be able to:
    • name and define key concepts in these fields 
    • employ those concepts in linguistic analyses conducted at the relevant levels (phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic level)
    • conduct research into topics of special individual interest
    • discuss the theoretical positions, modes of analysis and proposed hypotheses in the above fields
  • in the fields of multilingualism, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and cognitively oriented and other interdisciplinary research, students will be able to:
    • present and evaluate contemporary theoretical approaches
    • identify and employ research methods
    • evaluate the results of empirical research
  • at the general social and professional level the students will be able to: 
    • identify and analyze the role of language and communication in interpersonal and societal processes
    • engage in scientific activities, design and participate in research projects in the field of linguistics and related fields
    • adopt a scientifically-based approach to problem solving and executing tasks in areas of their future professional interest insofar as these lie outside the scientific study of language, in case these areas are connected to language and communication (translation, foreign language teaching, publishing, journalism, public relations, etc.).

Professional title acquired upon finishing the study program: M.A. in Linguistics.

Both programs are organized in such a way that students are required to attend five compulsory courses during their first year: General Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Research Methods in Linguistics, whereas in their third semester they are to attend only elective courses, which are offered on a circular basis. Single-major students take some of the elective courses during their first two semesters. Some of the elective courses offered by the Linguistics Department are: Sociolinguistics, Linguistic Geography, Linguistic Typology, Corpus Linguistics, Language Policies and Language Planning, Educational Linguists, Pragmatics, Linguistic Anthropology, Discourse Analysis, Dialectology, Lexicology and Lexicography, Foreign Language Acquisition, Psycholinguistics, Language and Identity, Language and Mind, Linguistic Anthropology.
